Is Power Apps Still Worth Learning in 2026

This weekend, I attended the Canadian Power Platform Summit this week. It was a brilliantly organised community event with a wide range of sessions.

For me, one of the most thought provoking questions was discussed in April Dunnam's closing session - "Is it still worth learning Power Apps in 2026?"

My take is that although the future certainly lies in AI and agentic solutions, many businesses are not ready for it yet. There will always be a fundamental need for efficient data collection and basic automation. The use of Power Apps and Power Automate remains an effective way to carry out these tasks, particularly for those seeking a cost-effective way with standard Microsoft 365 and SharePoint licensing. The latest offerings from Microsoft still need time to mature and in the interim, there is still much value to be derived from learning Power Apps.

The following slide from April's session provided an excellent overview of the skills to learn in 2026.

In an age of AI, a human with fundamental skills is still required to spot mistakes and shortcomings in AI. These include Dataverse data models that could be structured better, logical errors in processes or formula, and AI agreeing with bad ideas just to please the user.

Becoming a solution-oriented expert therefore adds much value. This requires a library of skills, where the foundation includes Power Apps and Power Automate.

The next level is to master Copilot Studio - including how to build autonomous agents using Agent Flows and MCP (Model Context Protocol).

Beyond that, learning Pro Code techniques to faciliate Power Platform extensibility and Power Apps Code Apps are key parts of the skills library.

So in summary, learning Power Apps is still important in terms of building the foundations of your skills library. Moving further, Copilot Sudio, Pro Code entensibilty and Code Apps are the other priority skills to learn in 2026.
